That crust grows on the impeller, plugs the inlet screen, and eventually seizes the pump. Pueblo West’s own treatment plant, Colorado City’s Lake Beckwith supply, and the Arkansas River plants in Cañon City and Florence are all mountain-runoff water with the same tendency, and private wells around Penrose are usually worse.
Dry running. A float that sticks closed leaves the pan empty, and a submersible pump without water around it overheats in minutes. This is how a $150 float failure becomes a $400 pump failure.
Freeze. A pump left in a full pan into Pueblo’s mean first freeze of October 8 gets its housing cracked. It looks fine in April and leaks from the seam when it runs.
The replacement is matched to the cooler: pump GPH rises with CFM, and an undersized pump leaves the top of the pads dry while an oversized one floods the pan and the roof.
