The Pueblo Swamp Cooler Fall Shutdown Checklist: Before the First Freeze

Every swamp cooler in Pueblo has a date with the same enemy, and it usually arrives in the second week of October. The National Weather Service office in Pueblo puts the mean date of the first fall freeze at the airport at October 8, with a 50 percent chance of the first 32 degree night by October 5 and a 90 percent chance by October 20. The 28 degree hard freeze, the one that actually splits a full water line, runs October 13 at 50 percent and October 27 at 90 percent. The earliest first freeze on record is September 9, and it has happened twice, in 2001 and 2020. Last year’s first freeze came on October 19, 2025, and it was a hard one at 27 degrees.

At the same time, September is still cooler weather: NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals give Pueblo a September normal high of 83.1 degrees. So the shutdown is a squeeze between the last afternoon you want cold air and the first night that will break the cooler. This post is the checklist for getting it done. It takes about an hour with a ladder, a bucket, and a screwdriver, and the paid version runs $100 to $200 if the ladder is the hard part.

What actually breaks

Water expands about nine percent when it freezes, and a swamp cooler has water in four places that cannot take it.

The supply line. A quarter-inch copper or poly line runs from a hose bib or saddle tap, up the wall, across the roof, and into the float valve. Left full into a hard freeze, it splits, usually somewhere in the exposed run across the roof. You find out in April when the valve opens and the line sprays across the shingles or, on a line routed through the attic, into the insulation. Replacement runs $100 to $400 depending on the run.

The float valve. The brass or plastic valve body holds water on both sides. Ice cracks the body or the seat, and the symptom in spring is a float that never shuts off, which is water sheeting off the roof edge onto the stucco. $100 to $250.

The pump. A submersible pump sitting in a full pan freezes solid. The housing cracks at the seam, and in April it hums, runs, and leaks around itself instead of lifting water to the pads. $150 to $400 installed.

The pan. Standing water freezes, expands, and works the seams and the drain fitting. A galvanized pan that was fine in September can be weeping by spring, and a pan is not a part; it is the cooler. On the decades-old original units common in Belmont, Sunset Park, and Eastwood Heights, this is how a working cooler becomes a $1,500 to $4,000 replacement.

Add it up and an undrained cooler routinely costs $300 to $600 in April for a line, a float, and a pump, against a shutdown that costs nothing to do yourself and $100 to $200 to have done.

The checklist

1. Turn the water off at the source

Not at the float. At the hose bib, the saddle tap, or the shutoff valve on the line. If you cannot find where the cooler line comes off the house plumbing, follow the quarter-inch line down from the roof; it usually ends at a small valve near an outdoor spigot or in the utility room. Close it and confirm the float stops filling.

2. Drain the line at both ends

This is the step people skip, and it is the one that costs money. Disconnect the line at the float valve on the roof and at the shutoff below. Let it drain, then blow it out with a few breaths or a hand pump if the run is long. A line that is shut but still full is a split line. On a two-story Pueblo West house or a long acreage run in Penrose, this is exactly the step worth paying someone with a ladder to do.

3. Drain the pan and dry it

Pull the drain plug or open the drain fitting at the bottom of the pan and let it empty. Then sponge or towel the rest. While the pan is wet, scrape the loose scale off the bottom; Pueblo Water’s published hardness averages 180 mg/L, which is 10.5 grains per gallon, and the plant reported 240 mg/L on September 4, 2026, so a season’s worth of evaporated water leaves a real crust. It comes off easier now than in April when it has cured for six months.

4. Lift the pump, drain it, and look at it

Unplug the pump, lift it out of the pan, and tip it to drain the housing. Check the inlet screen for scale and debris and clear it. If the pump struggled all September or the impeller is crusted, note it now and plan to replace it at the spring start-up rather than discovering it in June. Set it back in the dry pan.

5. Pull the pads

Aspen pads come out and go in the trash. They are done after a season of hard water, and left in place they hold damp against the pan all winter and grow whatever grows in a damp dark box. Rigid media pads get rinsed with a hose, dried in the sun for an afternoon, and either stored in the garage or set back in dry. Pulling them also lets the cover fit tighter.

6. Back off the belt and oil the bearings

Loosen the motor mount enough to take the tension off the V-belt so it does not take a set over the winter. Put a few drops of oil in the blower shaft bearing cups. This is a two-minute step that saves a squeal in June.

7. Cover the cooler

A fitted cooler cover keeps snow, wind-blown grit, and the spring dust storms out of the pan and off the blower. Strap it. Pueblo West, the Greenhorn Valley around Colorado City, and the Penrose bench are open and windy, and a loose cover is a shredded cover by March.

8. Seal the damper

Close the down-duct damper and seal it from inside. Most Pueblo coolers feed a single ceiling grille in the hallway, and the duct behind it connects a warm house to a cold metal box on the roof. NOAA’s normals give Pueblo about 165 nights a year at or below 32 degrees, and every one of those nights an unsealed duct pulls heated air up and out. A gasketed insulated cover over the ceiling grille, or a foam board cut to fit behind it, closes the hole. On a house with both a cooler and a furnace, this step shows up on the gas bill.

9. Inside the house

Set the cooler switch or thermostat to off. Close and latch the windows you cracked all summer for relief air. If the cooler is on the same circuit as anything else, leave the breaker alone; if it has its own, switching it off is fine.

Timing it

Book or do the shutdown in the last two weeks of September. If you are still using the cooler into early October, watch the overnight forecast from the NWS Pueblo office every evening, and when a night in the low 30s shows up, do steps one through four that afternoon. The cover and the damper can wait a week. The line cannot. Higher stops in the service area freeze first: Colorado City sits around 5,853 feet and Cañon City at 5,351, against Pueblo’s 4,692, and the Greenhorn Valley and Fremont County shutdowns get scheduled in the first half of the window for that reason.

The do-it-yourself honesty

Plenty of Pueblo homeowners winterize their own cooler and do it well. Where people get in trouble is the same three places every year: shutting the float but leaving the line full, draining the pan but leaving wet aspen pads in it, and forgetting the damper. If you do one thing from this list, do step two.

Where the $100 to $200 shutdown earns its money: two-story roofs and steep Mesa Junction roofs where the ladder is the risk, coolers that need the cover strapped against real wind, and any cooler you suspect had a bad season, because the tech finds the failing pump or the scaled float now and has the part on the truck for April.
